Since it is known how easily Donald J Trump can be influenced, the Brits decided to do just that: “You want as many as possible of those who Trump consults to give him the same answer. So we need to be creative in using all the channels available to us through our relationships with his Cabinet, the White House staff, and our contacts among his outside friends.” UK Ambassador to the US Sir Kim Darroch in leaked cables that came out in July 2019. He went on to say that “the president’s friends were ‘cultivated’ by London and therefore could be used to manipulate the president.”
The word “cultivated” has a very specific meaning in espionage, it means to recruit someone to work for you or your cause. This is meddling and far worse, it is an active operation against a US President. You may imagine that these things do happen, yes, but never so openly or boldly. From a diplomatic view, this is beyond embarrassing and ought to damage relations even if “special” but will not. As expected, few US mainstream media outlets even commented on the above revelations. If you wish to know how much the Brits spend on officially “cultivating” Americans - the UK Ambassador’s private residence hosts almost 800 breakfasts, lunches, dinners and cocktail parties a year. Special eh? Or just the Former Colonial Master playing the former slaves? Is hardly a once-off attempt. Then they wined and dined Mr Trump (and his entire family) with Her Majesty, the Queen, and Donald J Trump bend to touch his toes: 'We are basking in a big success, with doors open everywhere in Washington. As a result, our relationship with this Administration, at this critical juncture for the UK, feels closer and stronger.” Yet the ambassador warned, thank God, “We might be flavour of the month, but this is still the land of 'America First.’”
Tell me what did Winston S Churchill do to the USA in World War Two? “As America is now our great strategic reserve for the final blows, much of your time will have to be devoted to wisely guiding Washington in its war effort and not letting vital war direction slip out of our hands. I think your services in this respect can now be at least as great as your services in the Empire war service. Your contacts with Roosevelt are now a most valuable war asset…” Union of South Africa Premier, General Jannie Smuts, to Winston S Churchill, 1942.
LOL, exceptional, eh? Let it not be presumed that the Brits felt bad about their manipulations, not at all, a Foreign Office official: “The British public would expect our Ambassadors to provide Ministers with an honest, unvarnished assessment of the politics in their country. Their views are not necessarily the views of Ministers or indeed the government. But we pay them to be candid. Just as the US Ambassador here will send back his reading of Westminster politics and personalities.”
