Code Name Cadillac or GMJ 14 follows on Code Name Missa 72 or GMJ 13. In fact it takes place a few days after and continue the fascinating story of the rescue of Mark Sithole. It shows how complex the world of espionage is when politicians start interfering and fearing what a defector like Mark Sithole can reveal about their own shenanigans in the past. Many a double or penetration spy had been caught because of defectors and in history this is interesting, if you wish to know what happened, look at all the archives, not only one country’s but all of those involved. That is how the truth is uncovered, you get the truth from the other side, not your own.
In Code Name Cadillac, Mark Sithole has to be smuggled out of South Africa before he is killed and under what is known as false flag operations. That is in order to do something so that everyone believes someone else did it. In casu Foxtrot & Geelslang under Angelique’s direct instructions plan and conduct the operation to let MI6 take the blame and fallout, something they are not displeased with. Later on the Third Anglo Boer War breaks out between Angelique Dawson and Sir John, the MI6 representative for reasons which are revealed in the book which are 307 printed pages long. For a Kindle, probably close to 400. They do seem to get longer, the GMJ Books. Why I would not know for they are not planned meticulously, I just type them and the rest, as they say is history. It depends on the story and as always it is complicated, betrayals, surprising endings and nonstop action. We also reveal how Foxtrot and gang discovered what would later become the Ukuthula Ranch featuring in most books, the place where they retire to in Northern Mozambique.
The best moment in the book? Well there are a few, Angelique cheating Foxtrot out of half the bet he won during Code Name Missa 72 (yeah, who would have thought she would do that, lol) but for me, at the end of the book, Mark Sithole makes a speech, I suppose, where he explains Rhodesia and the UDI and their complex relationship with their former Head of State, Queen Elizabeth II to Sir John. It is frankly something to read and I well remember standing there on the side listening to it. That is a good moment.
The cover is of Niassa Province in Northern Mozambique where the story plays off and the Gripen fighter jets feature in the book. The rest you have to read yourself and I hope you enjoy it.
An interesting development arrived for authors recently and not soon enough if you ask me. Amazon and others, decided to go after the fake review frauds on their websites. What happens is that an entire underground market started with reviews being written, not by a customer or reader, but someone paid by the seller or author to do so. It is a damn mess to be honest and every author is exposed to such shenanigans.
You are contacted by the “reviewers” and even magazines. For a fee they will write a new review and post it...you know what, you can even write it yourself and they will post it for you! It is with the magazines, nothing but advertisement disguised as “news or interviews” and they hope the reader is too stupid to realize what is happening. Unfortunately it is happening on every website including the biggest ones stating it is not, hear me, it is.
The reverse also happens. You get emails from people, Pakistanis & Nigerians mostly if I look at their English, worse than mine, threatening to write bad reviews if you will not pay them to write good reviews. My answer to both is to take a hike, I do not pay people to write reviews, good or bad. I don’t care what people write in reviews, if they have a problem with the books, they can approach me directly.
Now there is nothing wrong with reviews in principle. Let us be clear on the principle and I support it as it does show the new reader that he may be on to something before he parts with his hard earned cash to try a new writer. So reviews are important enough to become an industry and a very dark one at that, it is sad that it ended in this debacle it is now. Such things do not help you, the reader or the author trying to make a living.
I don’t read reviews by the way. If someone is kind enough to email me directly (the email details are available in the books and website) and authorize me to quote him (anonymously), I do so. At the end of the day it is for you, my readers, to decide if you want to read the next GMJ Book or not. I cannot force you and I will not betray that what started the GMJ Series. Why should I? Money is not important to me. This reminds me, I am asked why so many books? Well, I have no life really. I write a full length GMJ Book every month because I have the time to do so. Also I like writing them and for some reason I do not suffer from “writer’s block” either - frankly I don’t think it even exists and so it is easy for me. I simply type away and the story writes itself and I never expected to be at book 15 now. Nah, that surprised even me.
Each book can be read separately and consequently I have to rewrite the historical background of the story in every book. Yes, it is annoying to me also to repeat myself but we have to think of the new reader, the one that did not (yet, I hope) followed the saga and he needs to know what happened. That is the most difficult part, to keep the historical repeats interesting. I mean, you can only tell the same story so much but I am working on it.
Extraordinarily, I can see from the download statistics and emails that most readers are female and not twenty year's old either. They like the idea of a super smart, attractive and damn dangerous woman like Angelique Dawson winning every time. She is also in her late thirties at the earliest stage of us meeting her and she is “otherwise” in the extreme driving her future soul and husband, Foxtrot, nuts. But she has a heart of gold behind her antics and she is better than the men who are pretty special themselves. How else can it be? Such men will not respect a lesser, she has to be better.
The other question I am often asked, we blogged (what a word) about it before, is the truth behind the stories or how far is what you read pure fiction. I love such questions…it shows I am convincing the reader there is more behind the story than what I am telling. The answer is like always, whatever the characters say or make statements on is the truth. If they say a South African Type 209 submarine, the SAS Manthatisi, “sunk” in exercises an entire NATO squadron, you can bet your ass that took place. The books are all base on reality. Like in the new forthcoming book, Code Name Blue Tang (GMJ Book 15, now at page 90) we look at something which took place in 2009 at the Overberg Missile Test Range in South Africa. Yep, that happened and was a closely guarded secret up to now but you can read it yourself. Book 14, Code Name Cadillac, by the way, is with the editors, it will be available in a few days. So to answer your question - you will learn astonishing things in the GMJ Books about the world of espionage, military history and I hope romance as the entire Series is written to honour my late wife. It is a love story first and probably why the women readers love the books so much.
Reviews are important though, Make no mistake, it can break an author but it will never break or even make me – why? Simply, I already achieved what I set out to do. In one year, GMJ wrote more far more than a million words to honour his departed soul. That will never be taken away from them. As you also know, there are codes in the books for her, and she gets them. Even the book’s name, like Code Name Blue Tang, that is a code. And the people knowing the codes are less than ten in the world. And yes, I am proud of my books and stories. Having said this, none of them are worth her life. I will trade all of them for five minutes with her.
I dare say I am asked a lot whether the GMJ Books are facts or fantasy as some astonishing comments and remarks are made in the books. Let me say from the start the books are well researched and I know what I write about, so yes, what the characters say are facts and they have different views, no liberal ones to be sure but not racist either, there is one hell of a difference.
These books are based on facts. There are many sides to any story, there is the truth, the lies, your version, my version and then something in between written in history books for a very definite political purpose. It is as the old warning to historians goes – you find two world leaders, one is a decorated war hero, a man of the people that took his country from utter despondency to financial miracles in much less time than any other world leader ever did. He is a teetotaler, vegetarian and none smoker and a bachelor until just before the end of his life – ah yes, Adolf Hitler. And then you have the fat overweight leader, never seen without a cigar or a glass of whisky. He sleeps naked, romp around in such an indecent state in the White House and he has a terrible desire to interfere with military operations, always with disastrous consequences. He has a track record of military catastrophes for 40 years and he is known as Winston Churchill, the famous British hero. You see what I mean?
Now, Winston Churchill does not come over good in any GMJ Book. He is called the “Arch Liar” and his ridiculous claim on swimming the ”mighty Apies River” is constantly mentioned as a joke. So is his heavy drinking, it is known he was drunk at Cabinet meetings (yes, read the diaries of the generals that were there) and his lists of mistakes, from 1899 to 1948 is constantly highlighted and yes, shockingly, every one of them can be proven. For instance he did act as an Army officer instead as a neutral war correspondent in the Second Anglo Boer war and hence was almost executed when captured. Yes he did interfere so much with the Royal Navy in the First World War, as Sea Lord, that a man no less than Admiral Beatty of Jutland fame, made some nasty comments on his incompetence which came to a head at a place Gallipoli where, by the way, more French soldiers died than ANZACS. Yes, in 1919 he caused the Russian village of Emtsa to be shelled with poison gas against the wishes of Cabinet. Yes, he did advise the British Cabinet to use poison gas on Northern Indian tribesmen and yes, the Royal Air Force did bomb defenceless tribesmen up to the 1950s in the British Empire. They also attacked Berlin three times before the London Blitz began and guess on whose orders? At one stage he wanted Tokyo bombed with poison gas (1944) and under his leadership the French Navy, former comrades and neutral, was attacked by the Royal Navy in 1940, 1297 sailors died at Mers-el-Kébir and he did mine Norway’s neutral waters before that, causing Germany to invade Norway. Under his premiership more than 2000 men and women were arrested and held under the infamous Regulation 18 B, no trial, no habeas corpus and as suspected Nazi sympathisers, again in 1940. And yes, when he made his “Iron Curtain” speech after the war he forgot to mention he was by far not the first to so, Nazi Dr Josef Goebbels did so years before him and so I can go on and you can read the rest in the GMJ Books.
Why is this mentioned? Simply because the main characters are Afrikaners, they don’t like Churchill and they know their history and they know lots of other shocking stuff too which comes out in the GMJ Books. I call it privately the “OMG it is Montgomery or Patton Syndrome” and let it explain. If you watch any program on National Geographic or History Channel or read any website or almost any book on warfare you realise the authors suffer from the “OMG it is Montgomery or Patton Syndrome.” Almost every one of you reading here and did not yet read GMJ would know that if the Cold War ever had become hot, the NATO Air Forces would have blown the Warsaw Pact Air Forces apart clearing the way for the tanks. Well, after East Germany fell and the German Air Forces combined two things happened which you probably don’t want to hear. First the East German MIG 31 Fulcrums and Sukhoi SU 27 Flankers went up in mock dogfights, yes, the famous Top Gun and Red Flag operations and they defeated every single Western fighter jet, shockingly so. Why? Stolen South African technology called the Kukri helmet, look-down shoot-down capabilities. It took the USAF up to 2007 to get such a helmet in service and it is by all accounts a failure. We were there by 1983 already. Then the Germans tested their newly acquired Soviet made air to air missiles and guess what? They came to the conclusion it was 5-8 times better than the American missile the West German Air Force had, the Sidewinder. Ah, and then the Germans (with nine other European Nations) went on and created the IRIS-T which is currently in use and way ahead of anything the USAF has. So air superiority was not the least guaranteed and I can carry on.
If you ask any website or television documentary what is the best 155 mm field artillery system they mention an American one with an 18 mile range. Shame, the South African G5, with base bleed ammunition, shoots more than double that range, you will be dead long before you even deploy. Another astonishing fact, the South African made Mirage Cheetah D (based on the Israeli Kfir) went up in the 1990s against the F-15 Strike Eagle, and yep, the Cheetah D shot the Strike Eagle down in exercises. I can go even further and say to you that every MRAP vehicle you see is built on 40 year old South African technology, yep, it goes back to 1974. Did you know 93% of Predator strikes actually misses the intended target? Yes, a US Senate report says so. Or that when that liberal betrayed the NSA and ran to Russia, yep, ISIS and Al-Qaeda got themselves five new ciphers immediately. Read Code Name Odette or GMJ 8 and you will find a lot more details.
What about the main premise? That no carrier group will get close enough to South African to land and retrieve Special Forces? The SAS Manthatisi, a Type 209 South African submarine did, in an exercise in 2008, sunk an entire NATO squadron and yes, two French nuclear attack boats, the Amethyst and the Casabianca sunk two new American carriers in exercises. Carriers are extremely vulnerable despite what you saw in Top Gun and guess what else? Yes, the F-14 Tomcat is not rated as a good fighter, it is seen as a putter and guess who said that? A colonel in the USAF who was directly responsible for the F-16 and guess what else? The F-16 shot every new F-35 down in mock combat and no, the F-35 is not nearly as stealthy as claimed. The lists of shocking statistics are endless and what comes out in GMJ is a warning. Note what I say to you, it is not written to belittle anyone or any nation or glorify South Africa. No, the opposite, it is to say “Wake up, there are a lot more in this world than ’OMG it is Montgomery or Patton’ because you only study your own.” You will get a nasty surprise if you carry on with your Syndrome. I am lucky, I know Western history better than most and I know the Sub Saharan sphere better than most. Nothing my characters say are devoid of facts. You may not like their comments, but you will be very well advised to wonder why these books were written in the first place. Arrogance is not advisable in war and interestingly, I got an email stating the GMJ Books are being translated (illegally) into Chinese. Why is that?
George M James is a pseudo name for the author and used for security reasons. He is an expert on counter-terrorism and counterinsurgency operations in sub-Saharan Africa, a military historian and published author of more than 50 books. In the GMJ Series, you will learn about Covert Operations, Special Forces techniques, current political analyses and military history not known outside the select few. Every GMJ Book is based on historical fact and often what is revealed in a GMJ Book is published by the mainstream media a short while later. Many of the GMJ Books are used as training material by Police Forces (SWAT) across the world. Note please that GMJ does not claim to have served in South African Army or Police Special Forces.
